Other People's Cakes

I found this amazing Andy Warhol Banana Cake on Flickr. I don't know the baker, but her name also happens to be Debbie. Here are her other cakes.

The Brick Testament

I wish I had thought of this. Someone is illustrating The Bible with LEGOs. Here is the link. (Hat tip: Dan.)

F is for Fake

We watched this the other night. Simply put, it’s a free-form documentary by Orson Welles about art forger Elmyr de Hory. However, it gets far more complicated than that. Welles incorporates the stories of other hoaxes, too, including Welles’s own role in the 1938 radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds.

I enjoyed the pace of the film (see intro). The story of Elmyr de Hory is also intriguing. De Hory explains that he tried to sell his own paintings, but found he was far more successful at copying other peoples’ works. He demonstrates his skill by recreating several famous paintings for the camera. He then destroys each fake in the fire, I guess to show his sincerity. Here is an excerpt.

All Kinds of Vegetables

I don't know if anyone else remembers the show Vegetable Soup from the 70s. Here are some Outerscope 1 episodes, and here is a Woody the Spoon recipe for Japanese boiled rice. Bette Midler played the voice for Woody.

Metro Sofa

If I designed chairs (and I distinctly do not) I would want them to look like these. My favorites are the Numbers Up Green Chair and the Warhol-Style Pop Art Parlor Chair (see left). Here is the company's homepage.

Commandment VII

Here is Commandment VII, "You shall not commit adultery." As I mentioned, there are many different kinds of adultery, but I decided to just pick three.

Circus Surprise Sherbet Bars

Does anyone remember these? They were raspberry sherbet bars that came on plastic, brightly colored animal-shaped sticks. I used to buy them at summer camp, and my sister and I collected the sticks. Anyway, I thought of them today because it was yet another half day for the NYC public schools, and I spent the afternoon in the park with my daughters and their friends. We got ice cream from the ice cream truck, and it occurred to me that the Popsicle Dora the Explorer bar pales in comparison to my memory of the Circus Surprise bar .

Lichtenstein Show

I'm a big Lichtenstein fan, so I definitely plan to see the Roy Lichtenstein: Girls show at the Gagosian Gallery. The show runs through June 28.

I like the comic-strip paintings, but my favorite Lichtensteins are actually the brushstroke paintings (see below). In short, he did meticulous pop-art renderings of the abstract expressionist brush stroke. He discusses it here in this 1966 BBC interview (towards the bottom).

Still Got It

We went camping this weekend in Upstate New York. I am pleased to report that I still know how to skip a stone.

Commandment VII

I am about half way through illustrating Commandment VII, "You shall not commit adultery." In preparation for this illustration, I decided to calculate how many different combinations of adultery there are, assuming one member of a couple cheats with one other adult. My findings are neatly summarized in this Excel table.

Note: I couldn't remember how to calculate this with factorials. If anyone knows the equation for this, please elucidate.

Brooklyn-Queens Day?

My kids had the day off from school today for Brooklyn-Queens Day. I didn't know what Brooklyn-Queens Day was, so I asked some of the other parents. They didn't know either. Here is the history, for those who are interested.

Ten Sentences

I came across some grammar sentences that I wrote in 5th grade. Here they are:
1) The big fat lady/fell through the floor.
2) The skinny man/slid down the bathroom drain.
3) The ballerina/was dancing on her toes when one of them broke.
4) The circus clown/fell off his silts and landed in a pile of mud.
5) The ugly lady/looked in the mirror and it cracked.
6) The tall man/tripped over his own feet.
7) The lady with the purple wig/bought a $10,000 hat.
8) The boy/ was so stupid he thought 2 + 2 = 22.
9) The acrobat/fell and the net wasn't there.
10) The old man/broke all his bones in his body.
I don't see any issues there, do you?
