Vintage Grumet

I found a book of Greek Gods and Goddesses that I drew when I was in fourth grade. I'm not sure why most of these look evil, or why I drew them all with muppet noses. Regardless, I think my favorites are Poseidon and Dionysus (the God of Wine).

CBS Dexter

I just watched the first two episodes of Dexter that were aired on CBS. I thought the edited scripts held up surprisingly well. The only noticably awkward part was hearing Doakes refer to Dexter as "mother lover."

Lunar Eclipse

I watched the eclipse last night from the roof of our apartment building. I started watching at 8:43, and went inside for the last time around ten. I didn't watch continuously because it was cold, but I went inside and back out again about four or five times during the course of the hour. The moon was slightly less visible each time I went outside. By the end, it was completely obscured by a burnt orange haze.

I didn't take any pictures of the eclipse, but for those of you who missed it, I found this video of the 3/3/07 lunar eclipse on YouTube. Check out the video - it's pretty spectacular.

Zeus Pictogram

The Heart Throb show is over, so I have returned my attention to my Ten Commandments pictogram project. Here is a draft of Zeus, which I plan to use as part of the illustration for Commandment 1 (You shall have no other gods before me). I plan to put Zeus in the middle of a big red No circle, but I'm afraid I might lose too much detail when I cover the drawing with the slash line. I'll have to think about how to get around this.

Spell With Flickr

This tool could rapidly put me out of business. Type in any word, name, or phrase, and Spell With Flickr will produce it using Flickr photographs of individual letters. If you don't like the letters that come up, click on the letter and a new letter will appear. Try it - it's pretty fun.

Rejected!

My Digestive System piece was rejected by the Museum of Bad Art. I received a very polite rejection letter which explained that the museum only accepts bad art that was made in earnest. It does not accept satires, spoofs, or intentionally bad art.

Regardless, I am still donating the piece to the MOBA's Rejection Collection charity auction. I'm not sure when the auction is, but I'll be sure to keep you posted.

More Valentine Pastiches

I made these for the Heart Throb group show, which starts Monday. The first is a text message version of Robert Indiana's LOVE (BFFL = Best Friends For Life.) The second is a cutout modeled after Matisse's Les Condomas. I was late in finishing these, which is unlike me. It's because I was busy doing important things like this. And this.

Teeth (Note: Contains Spoilers!)

Well, we saw Teeth last night. Teeth is a dark comedy about a teenage girl who discovers, quite gruesomely, that she has vagina dentata (teeth in her vagina). The film is written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein, Roy Lichtenstein’s son.

The movie begins rather cleverly with the main character, Dawn, shown as a child sitting in a small wading pool with her also young stepbrother. The stepbrother tries to finger Dawn’s vagina, and his finger is badly bitten. The next scene shows Dawn as a teenager, leading the teenage chastity movement at her school. And her now grown stepbrother, played by creepy Matt from Nip/Tuck, is so traumatized by the finger biting incident that he will only engage in anal sex with his girlfriends.

I thought the film was a bit like Stephen King’s Christine, in that the teeth only attack the penises or fingers of men who Dawn doesn’t like. (There is one scene in the middle where Dawn enjoys the sex, and the teeth do not attack.) Her teeth attack intruders at first, including her boyfriend, who rapes her, and her gynecologist, who tries to molest her during the exam. However, towards the end, Dawn begins to premeditate her attacks, which I guess is supposed to show empowerment.

The movie is funny in places. I think my favorite scene is when the creepy gynecologist gets all five fingers bitten off, and screams “Vagina dentata! Vagina dentata!” as his severed fingers lay scattered on the floor. Or maybe my favorite scene is when Dawn seduces her now grown stepbrother, bites his penis off, and feeds his penis to the rottweiler. I also enjoyed the subtle detail of the nuclear reactors visible behind Dawn’s house, perhaps explaining her mutation. However, as Bob points out, the nuclear reactors were emitting black smoke from cooling towers which would only contain clean water. (Details like this really bother Bob.)

In short, I enjoyed the film, but you may want to wait for Netflix.

The Three Investigators U.S. Editions Collection Site!

I loved these books when I was a kid. Here is a description of the series, for those of you unfamiliar. Here is the main link to the site. The site contains some interesting information. I especially liked reading about the authors and artists who contributed to the Three Investigators series. I also liked the vintage letters that were sent to fans, and the fine collection of fan-submitted art.

The Noisy Alphabet

Artist Tom Gauld has an onomatopoeia poster that is similar to mine, but I actually like his better. I did mine in a pop-art style, but he did his in black and white, much in the style of Edward Gorey. Gauld has a second Gorey-like alphabet entitled "Our Hero Battles Twenty-Six Alphabeticised Terrors." Here is the link to his gallery.

Counting Boa

I found this today while updating my portfolio. This snake has eaten the numbers one through four, and is pursuing the number five. I never did print this one, but it is still one of my favorite designs. Also available in your child's name.

Hannah Montana Movie!

My daughters, ages 5 and 3, are both obsessed with Hannah Montana. This is admittedly my fault, since I let them watch the show and play the games on the Disney website. However, I was surprised recently when my 3-year-old asked if we could go to the Hannah Montana concert. I told her no, and she started to sob. Not bratty, fake, if-I-keep-doing-this-I-will-get-what-I-want sobs, but genuine, heartbroken sobs. I explained to her that the concert was too expensive, and she replied that she would make the tickets herself so we wouldn’t have to pay for them. She then made the tickets with construction paper and marker.

Needless to say, I still did not take them to the concert, but we did the next best thing and saw the Hannah Montana movie at the Zigfeld theater. The movie was actually much better than I expected. Instead of an extra long episode of the Hannah Montana show, which I anticipated, the movie showcased the Hannah Montana concert tour. The movie was in 3D, which was not essential to the film, but it was fun, and did give a vague sense of being present at the concert. My favorite parts of the film were the 3D previews and the 3D credits, which floated in mid-air.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

Bob and I rented this from Netflix the other night. I found it amusing, in a Trekkies or American Splendor sort of way. For me, the best part was when Steve Wiebe filmed himself in his garage breaking the world record for Donkey Kong. The camera was focused on the game screen, but in the background we heard Wiebe's young son shouting "Daddy, come wipe me! Daddy, come wipe me! STOP PLAYING DONKEY KONG!!!!!!" This scene summed up the story perfectly.

Anyway, here is the official site for the documentary.
