Eustace Tilley

Many thanks to David Marc Fischer for reminding me that the 2009 Eustace Tilley Contest is already underway! For this contest, entrants are invited to create their own version of Rea Irvin's Eustace Tilley. At left is my first entry, called The Son of Eustace. More entries to come.
Here are the winners from the 2008 contest.

New Yorker Cover

Okay, this is funny. Here is the cover of the December 22 & 29, 2008 issue of the New Yorker that arrived today in my mailbox. I would like to say that they ripped me off, except clearly they didn't. How's that for coincidence/timing?

Mondrian Spreadsheets

I made this Mondrian advent calendar using
Microsoft Excel. I never did print it, but if you would like to print and score it yourself you are welcome to. It's based on Mondrian's Composition with Red, Yellow, & Blue.

I also invite you to make your own Mondrian Excel spreadsheet masterpiece. Please send me your Excel file, and I will post the image up here. Thanks!

Letter Q

I considered using Quaker Oats for Q, but both my friend David and my cousin-in-law Ed lobbied heavily for Quisp and Quake. They were right, of course. Here are four Quisp and Quake commercials from 1968. The commercials were done by Jay Ward, who also did the Cap'n Crunch commercials and the Rocky and Bullwinkle series.

Letter N

Okay, back to breakfast cereals. As you've probably guessed, I am partial to nerds. Nerds Cereal was therefore a natural choice for N. I had trouble with this one at first because I couldn't find a clear image of a Nerds Cereal box. I finally found a magnet on E-bay.

Speaking of nerds, PEZ has released a limited edition Star Trek PEZ collector's series. I can't wait to buy it.
