Happy New Year!

And by this I mean Happy Federal Fiscal Year 2009. The Federal Fiscal Year starts October 1. Last year I prepared an alphabet of Federal Acronyms (AFA) to welcome the new year. Oddly enough, the Federal Acronyms alphabet page comes up near the top when I google my website. I'm not sure why this is, but I figured it was worth posting again. Click here for the answers, or visit http://www.ulib.iupui.edu/subjectareas/gov/docs_abbrev.html for a complete list of Federal acronyms. (Hint: Q, X, and Y are Military acronyms.)

A – ACF
B – BEP
C – CDC
D – DOD
E – EEOC
F – FBI
G- GSA
H – HUD
I – IRS
J – JCS
K – KSC
L –LOC
M – MARAD
N – NEA
O – OMB
P – PTO
Q – QAE
R – RRB
S – SBA
T – TSP
U – USPS
V – VA
W – WISQARS

Letter E

I used Eggo Cereal for E. I decided that the Eggo E was recognizable enough to stand on its own without further visual cues. Artist Heidi Cody apparently agrees.
Somewhat related: here is a 1972 "L'Eggo My Eggo" commercial from YouTube. I'm pretty sure the actor is Gordon Jump from WKRP in Cincinnati.

"Honor. Integrity. Leadership."

I like working with David Marc Fischer because he will occasionally challenge me to think beyond breakfast cereals. Last week, for example, he asked me to draw a portrait of Sarah Palin as a pit bull with lipstick. I thought a bit, and responded with this. David wanted me to add some more details, but since I don’t normally work electronically, this was the best I could do. David then consulted with designer Chris Orsi, who did the final piece (see above). Thanks, Chris!

Here is David’s post.

Letter D

At first I couldn't think of any breakfast cereals that start with D. Then I did some research, and remembered Dinky Donuts, Dino Pebbles, and Donkey Kong Junior Cereal. I ultimately went with Dino Pebbles . I drew this image from the original box. The pastel blobs are supposed to be dinosaur-shaped marshmallows.

Letter C

I chose Cookie Crisp for C. I almost used Crazy Cow instead, because Crazy Cow had the cool feature of turning ordinary milk into chocolate milk. However, Cookie Crisp won overwhelmingly in my Facebook poll.

There have been several different Cookie Crisp mascots, but I chose to use the original mascot, Cookie Jarvis.

Update:
I finally bought a new card reader for my camera, so here is a better picture of the Apple Jacks A.

Letter B

I drew Boo Berry for B. I never actually tried Boo Berry, but I remember the commercials well. I thought Boo Berry and Franken Berry had been discontinued, but they are both still available
through Amazon. They can also be found at Walmart and Target during the Halloween season (according to Wikipedia, anyway).

Oddest Book Title

"Greek Rural Postmen and Their Cancellation Numbers" has won the distinction of the oddest book title for the past 30 years. The Bookseller announced its "Diagram of Diagrams" contest in July to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Diagram Prize, which honors the oddest book title of the year.

Runner-ups were "People Who Don't Know They're Dead" and "How To Avoid Huge Ships." Here is the full story.

A is for Apple

I chose Apple Jacks for the letter A of my breakfast cereal alphabet. The Apple Jacks box has changed since I was a kid, but this is the one I remember. (Note: I took this picture with my phone, so the color is off from the original. I need to buy a new card reader for our digital camera.)
