Finished!

At long last, here is my completed Ten Commandments project. The music is from the Ten Commandments movie soundtrack.

Commandment X

Here is Commandment X, "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." I drew one man coveting another man's iPhone. I tried drawing the iPhone in black in white, but it looked too much like a calculator. In the final version I cut out a photo of an iPhone and glued it in place. You will probably have to click on this one to see it well.

Life's What You Make It

This is definitely the girliest cake I've ever done. My daughter turned 4 yesterday, and she asked me to make her a Hannah Montana cake. Painting Hannah with icing was beyond my expertise, so I cheated and made a collage instead. I cut out a picture of Hannah from a thank-you card and put it on top of the cake. Then I used strawberry flavored Whoppers (which are awesome, by the way) to create a Hollywood mirror around Hannah. Finally, I put an official Hannah Montana guitar shaped candle in the corner. Devon loved it.
I received many good suggestions for how to make this cake. Thanks to everyone who helped!

Commandment IX

Here is the Ninth Commandment, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." I had originally planned to use Pinocchio here, but in the end I decided to draw a pictogram of a boy crying wolf. The wolf in the speech bubble is from a wolf crossing sign.

New Yorker Cover

David Marc Fischer asked me to draw this New Yorker cover parody for his blog. It's a portrait of Eustace K. Tilley in Klan garb. I have to admit that this was really fun to do. Here is David's post.

For Frank

A while ago my friend Frank asked me to make a cake for his birthday. Specifically, he asked for a chocolate cake with lemon frosting, decorated in the style of Chuck Close.

Frank's birthday is tomorrow, and I did make him a cake. But I made it Keith Haring, not Chuck Close. And since Frank lives in Chicago and we live in Queens, he only gets a picture of said cake. I guess you would call it a virtual cake?

Anyway, here we are enjoying Frank's cake. It was delicious.

What's New in Children's Literature

We went to Philadelphia this weekend, and I saw this article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The following are real children's book titles, apparently sold in earnest:

My Beautiful Mommy, out since spring, prepares preschoolers for Mother's nip-and-tuck.

What Is Jail, Mommy? unlocks the mysteries of the Big House, comparing prison to "big-people's time-out."

Why Daddy Is a Democrat (a sequel to Why Mommy Is a Democrat) lays out the values of the political left in simple sentences.

Too Much, new this year, takes on the super-sized topic of childhood obesity.

Mom and Mum are Getting Married untangles gay marriage.

Polar Bear, Why Is Your World Melting? is a primer on global warming.

I definitely need to tap into this market.

Cuidado Piso Mojado

This is my friend Heather's favorite sign. I wasn't able to incorporate this into my Commandments, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

Commandment VIII

The 8th Commandment is "You shall not steal." I illustrated dollar theft, intellectual property theft, and identity theft, going clockwise.

Happy 4th!

Artist Seymour Chwast made this lithograph in 1967 to protest the bombing of Hanoi in Vietnam. I think it still works today.

Also, here is a history of Uncle Sam. (Source: Sonofthesouth.net.)

Food Faces

I made these today with my girls. Not as good as these, perhaps, but it was still fun.

More Tom Gauld

I laughed out loud when I saw this cartoon. It's by artist Tom Gauld, who I've mentioned before. Here is the link to his gallery page.
